OWN’s ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’ Draws Record Ratings But Poor Reviews

Summer OWN

Viewers loved the premiere of Tyler Perry’s ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’ on Oprah’s OWN Network. The series premiere drew record ratings for Tyler and Oprah’s joint partnership. But the critics reviews of the show were brutal.

The show’s stars, Tika Sumpter, left, Renee Lawless and John Schneider helped to make “The Haves and the Have Nots” the network’s highest-rated premiere “ever,” according to a release from OWN.

“The Haves and the Have Nots” is typical of Tyler Perry’s obsession with glorifying the greedy “haves” while pitying the needy “have-nots” in his films.

Los Angeles Times critic Mary McNamara called the show “so awful that the awfulness appears intentional.”

From LA Times:

The 9 p.m. airing delivered 1.77 million viewers (1.57 million of them women age 25-54). The second episode at 10 p.m. grew to 1.8 million viewers (1.67 million were women 25-54).

However, initial reviews for the series were not kind. OWN did not send the show out to critics prior to its premiere, mirroring Perry’s policy of not allowing his films to be pre-screened for reviewers.

Brian Lowry of Variety called the show “claustrophobically cheap, not to mention poorly written and indifferently acted.” He added that the show could potentially damage Winfrey’s legacy of uplift and self-empowerment.

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times was even more scathing, calling the show “so awful that the awfulness appears intentional. Except that might make it interesting, and it just isn’t.”

Failed Try… Always Lie!!! …Dealing With Liars… Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

Liar (1)

We all know someone who lies…It’s either chronic, which is a compulsive liar, habitual, a person who is in the habit of lying or pathological; either way we know they’re liars. To dress their tales up, some call them unfulfilled promises. But a promise cannot be fulfilled or met, if there was never an intent to pursue the gesture. Which makes it exactly what it is when the opposite transpires, a LIE!

Whether our relationships are platonic or romantic, most people approach the topic of lying reluctantly. As it stands, our close relationships involve a lot of truth-telling as well as some dishonesty.

When it comes to love and marriage, people expect a spouse or boyfriend to be completely honest. But, at the same time, everyone values their sense of freedom and privacy. So while romantic partners typically want to please each other, at other times, couples experience competing goals which can make telling the truth more difficult.

And what about those sistahs and girlfriends you know, who gossip in your face but talk sh*t about you behind your back. Women being untruthful, deceitful, insincere and two-faced.

Join me tonight at 8:00 PM on “Conversations Of A Sistah” viaConversations Live as I tell you how to deal with a liar.

Trayvon Martin Photos Not Allowed in Zimmerman Opening Statements

George Zimmerman has lost another round in his upcoming 2nd degree murder case. ABC News reports that the judge presiding over the case will not permit Zimmerman’s lawyers to mention pictures of drugs or guns found on Trayvon Martin’s cell phone during opening statements.

“We have a lot of evidence that marijuana use had something to do with the event,” Zimmerman’s lawyer Mark O’Mara said during a hearing today in Sanford, Fla. “It could have affected his behavior.”

But Circuit Judge Debra Nelson agreed with the prosecution that the photos on Trayvon’s cell phone are irrelevant — at least in the opening statements.

The former self-appointed neighborhood watchman is accused of stalking and murdering 17-year-old Trayvon as the high school student made his way to the home of his father’s friend inside a gated community in February 2012.

Trayvon, who was from Miami, was visiting his father in Sanford after being suspended from school.

Zimmerman, 29, has pleaded not guilty. The trial is set for June 10.

Will and Jada raise their children differently…

Will_Smith

In a recent interview Will Smith says African-American parents believe they “own” their children as a result of slavery…

“I think that, specifically in African-American households, the idea of coming out of slavery, there’s a concept of your children being property and that was a major part that Jada and I released with our kids.

“We respect our children the way we would respect any other person. Things like cleaning up their room, you would never tell a full-grown adult to clean their room, so we don’t tell our kids to clean their rooms. Actually, we tell our kids ‘you don’t have a room, that’s our room and we are letting you borrow it.’

So the same way you would say to an adult if you let them use car, you say, ‘Yo man, clean my car! Don’t drive around all filthy like that!’ And it’s perfectly reasonable for you to want an adult to clean your car, so we feel it’s perfectly reasonable to ask our kids to clean the rooms that we are letting them use.”

Will and Jada are ridiculous and when I read the story to my mom she said and I quote… “They’re full of shit!” It’s bad parenting bottom line.

When The Engagement Ring ain’t nothing but a thing…Tonight on “Conversations Of A Sistah”

ashlee-simpson2

Aw it’s so nice when two people fall in love and really want to spend the rest of their lives together. They may have a long-term courtship before the man decides to spring for a ring and sometimes under different circumstances. Some women are willing to cross the Atlantic ocean and lay down their lives just to get that ring!

The ring for some women serve the purpose as a status quo, they’d like to feel as though their ten, twelve, thirteen and/or twenty-five plus year courtship is going to another level. When in fact it’s really going nowhere, except to your weekly rendezvous at your local motel 6, hanging out at his place or your yearly get-aways to a remote location.

Sometimes the buck stops with the engagement ring and the relationship goes no further. Why is that? What happened to the man’s intent behind the giving of the ring? Did he just give you the ring to “get that thing“? And are you satisfied with wearing this “front?”

Tune into Conversations Of A Sistah tonight at 8:00 PM as I discuss how SOME engagement rings ain’t nothing but a thing! Access the show via Conversations Live“.

See you on the air!!!!
